The Impact of Southeast Asian Diet on Gut Microbiome

Gut microbiome refers to microorganisms that live in our intestinal tract, primarily in the large intestine. While most gut microbiome studies have been performed in the US, Europe and China, Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory in Singapore conducts microbiome analysis to understand how specific Southeast Asian dietary choices shape the gut microbiome of populations in this region.

The team at Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory conducts gut microbiome research with a range of methods including cultivation of anaerobic microorganisms, next-generation sequencing, and bioinformatics. It is increasingly recognised that the human gut has a strong influence on human physiology and health.

With hundreds to thousands of different microbial species found in a faecal sample from any healthy person, understanding how our diets affect us can contribute towards future diet design for improved gut health. Greater scientific knowledge may also set the stage for more tailored therapeutic applications that could come in the form of probiotics.
